The Citizen dive watch is one of the most trusted and established dive watches on the market. Far be it from creating diving watches with a price tag out of the range of the average diver, Citizen dive watches are both sturdy enough to withstand the rigours of deep water scuba diving, yet affordable enough to serve as a primary or back up diving watch, which maybe why the Citizen watch company has gained such a loyal following amongst divers, swimmers, sufers and windsurfers.
Citizen was originally founded under the name “Shokosha Watch Research Institute” back in 1918. The trade name “Citizen”, originated from a pocket watch of the same name that was sold on the market in 1924. During the last 75 years, Citizen expanded it’s business and having experienced its most dramatic growth in the last twenty-five year period, achieved global recognition, leading to the dominant position it holds today as one of the key watchmakers globally.
Citizen is best known for it’s “Eco-Drive” technology. Citizen eco watches feature an environmentally friendly technology that utilizes natural or artificial sunlight to significantly extend the life of the battery. In fact, when you purchase a Citizen eco watch, you can expect your battery to be fueled by the natural light in your environment and may never need to replace the battery over the lifetime of the watch.
There are several watch models under the Citizen “divers” watch categeory. The main product lines are Aqualand, Professional Diver, Perpetual Calendar and Promaster Carbon. All modern day Citizen dive watches utilize the Citizen Eco-Drive technology, meaning you never need worry about replacing the battery.
All true Diving Watches must pass the ISO 6425 test. While the watches included here comply with the international standard for diving watches, Citizen stock a whole lot of other watches that are water resistant to 200 meters or more, yet don’t comply with all the requirements of the ISO tests. These water reistant watches may be equally suitable for recreation in and around water, but should not be used for serious deep water scuba dives.
To recap. ISO 6425 states, a true “Dive Watch” must have:
- A unidirectional bezel with a minimum of a marking at every 5 minute mark.
- A pre-select marker indicating a specific minute marking
- Clear minute points on the dial face of the watch
- Clear numbers that are readable from a distance of 25 cm (9.84 in)
- Numbers that are readable in complete darkness
- Some indicator of watch operation in all lighting conditions (commonly the second hand)
- Magnetic resisantce
- Shock resistance
- Resistance to corrosion
- A minimum level of robustness
- An “End of Life” indicator to signify that the battery has run out (if battery powered)

The Citizen Perpetual Calendar Dive Watches are an ultra stylish, durable dive and all purpose sports watch that are highlighted for their close fit on the wrist, (solid and thick, but not excessively so).
