The origin of the company goes back to April 1946 when Tado Kashio, an engineer who specialised in fabrication technology established the company with the first product being the Yubiwa Pipe, a finger ring that held a cigarette allowing the wearing to smoke it down to its nub, while leaving the wearer’s hand free to do other things. The product was a success due to the harsh economic conditions in Japan during the post-World War II era where cigarettes were a valuable commodity.

Kashio and his brothers used the profits gained from the Yubiwa Pipe to develop their own calculator products. At the time most calculators had to be manually operated using a motor or crank. Kashio with his knowledge of electronics was inspired to produce a calculator that used solenoids. The result was a desk-sized calculator that was finished in 1954 and became Japan’s first electro-mechanical calculator machine. His invention was oriented around the adoption of a 10-key number pad, while other calculators in this era used “full keypads”, which meant each place in the number (1s, 10s, 100s, etc) had nine keys. Another reason why Kashio’s invention was different from other designs in the period was that it used a signal display window rather than three separate windows that was commonly seen in competing products.

Back in 1957 the Casio company released the Model 14-A which sold for 485,000 yen. It was the world’s first all-electric compact calculator. Based in relay technology it marked the establishment of the Casio Computer Company.

The company moved into other areas in the 1980′s when budget electronic instruments and home keyboards gained popularity, the company also moved into the wristwatch scene and was one of the earliest manufacturers of quartz crystal watch that were used both in analog and digital timepieces.
