For those who enjoy getting out in the outdoors, Suunto have gone to great lengths to accommodate your needs with the new Suunto Quest sports precision watch that is designed specifically to help sports enthusiasts get the most from their outdoor training activities. If you are passionate about the outdoors, then the Suunto Quest watch has been specifically designed with outdoor activities in mind. The watch is capable of advanced analysis, planning and training and this watch also has an eye-catching design, you are sure to look sharp and get frequent compliments with the Suunto Quest watch and it is also very lightweight and comfortable.

This watch supports Suunto’s popular heart rate monitor chest strap devices and also a foot pod and GPS pod, that allows the watch to measure speed and distance to a high degree of accuracy. The Suunto Quest watch is a suitable watch for runners and features a tap-screen technology that is similar to the Garmin Forerunner 610. Inclusive in the long list of high performance sports watch features supported by the Suunto Quest are: interval timers, real-time heart rate display, a customizable display screen, stopwatch with laps (can be recorded simply by tapping the screen), real-time recovery and more. The running tools supported in the Suunto Quest watch can be accessed via an intuitive three-button interface.

More and more runners and athletes are turning to running cadence as a tool for working towards greater running efficiency. When the foot pod is activated your cadence as well as your speed, pace and distance details can be displayed on the watch. When using one of Suunto’s heart rate belts, it is possible to set up heart rate zone training, to ensure that you run at the right intensity for optimal fitness and performance improvement. If your heart rate gets too high or too low, the watch will alert you that you are outside your optimum heart rate zone, allowing you to adjust your pace.

Bellow are the features of the new Suunto Quest outdoor sports watch:

One of the fundamental things to note about the Suunto Quest digital training watch is that it is compatible with Movescount.com, Suunto’s online training diary and community portal. With support to transfer your data to personal computer, or training programs set up in Movescount to the Suunto Quest watch, you are offered real-time training guidance for intensity as well as speed. With the Suunto Quest watch and the Movescount online diary, you have at your disposal, a planning tool that turns your sports wrist watch into a portable personal trainer, allowing you to get the most from each training session.

Suunto Quest Running Pack

Movescount also allows you to customize the display of the Quest watch so you are viewing exactly the information you need in the middle of a workout. Post-workout, the benefits of this watch are that you can wirelessly transfer session data into Movesount.com via the Suunto Movestick Mini (a unique recovery time recommendation and sophisticated performances analysis training tool that includes full heart rate details and speed graphs). In other words the Suunto Quest is the kind of watch that will really appeal to those who want to analyze their training sessions in more depth and gain a deeper understanding of their fitness progress.

There are two color options, black or orange, with Suunto Movestick Mini and the Sunnto Dual Comfort Belt as part of the standard package. The Suunto Quest watch can even be paired with the Suunto Bike POD for bike speed and cadence for runners who are also part-time or full-time cyclists. The Suunto Quest will also be available in running packs that include the wristwatch, Suunto Dual Comfort Belt, Suunto Movestick Mini and Suunto Foot POD Mini. Suunto Quest will be available to purchase in the fall of 2011.

About Suunto – A Look Back In Time …

Suunto were originally known for their production of compass technology and we have only recently seen the emergence of Suunto sports watches, however Suunto’s committment and dedication to technology have quickly resulted in them becoming one of the premier manufacturers of high-tech sporting equipment, amongst runners, divers and outdoor enthusiasts. Here is a brief look at the Suunto story over time.

The Suunto company was started back in 1936 by Tuomas Vohlonen, a keen orienteerer and outdoors man who sought to solve the problem of inaccuracies in traditional “dry compasses” with a unique method resulting in a much steadier needle, leading to better readings and improved accuracy. This new technology would become patented and made standard of the Suunto company and by 1950 they were producing field compasses as well as a compass for marine activities, both being exported to over fifty countries around the world.

In 1952, when Helsinki hosted the Olympic games, Suunto created the torches that were used to carry the light of the Olympic flame. In the following year, the first marine compass, the Suunto K-12 was released and in 1957, Suunto began to manufacture hypsometers which have the ability to measure the height of trees. In the decade of the 60′s Suunto’s compass range grew even more significantly when it introduced its first diving compass. This came about from divers themselves when a British sports diver attached a Suunto compass to his wrist and discovered that it worked under water. While other companies may have disregarded this information, the engineers at Suunto saw it as an opportunity to launch a new business category.

In the years that followed Suunto’s business and exports grew significantly. Suunto was committed to focusing on combining its strength in new skills in electronics with its traditional precision mechanics. Accuracy, ruggedness and reliability where always the company’s core value and so from Suunto’s point of view, they were simply continuing to operate within their original core value systems with their new Suunto sport watches.

Not until 1987 would the seed that much of the company’s future growth would be based on come into being with the mass production of the SME dive computer Suunto sport watch. Up until this time, divers had to pre-plan the decompression time using diving tables and their overall safety duration of a dive. With the release of watches Suunto created for divers, all of these calculations could be handled by algorithms on the Suunto wrist watch itself, which was a great boon to divers who risked making mistakes with manual calculations. Naturally Suunto also combined their compass sports watch techniques to their highly innovative computer diving watches which was present in their Suunto Spyder watch and could not be more evident in Suunto’s next big market creation, the Suunto Vector which was released in 1998.

The Suunto Vector wristop computer was designed for outdoor leisure use with the ability to measure air pressure and thus altitude, with abilities to predict changes in wealth as well as time and direction. This watch Suunto created for divers would pave the way for the next generation of Suunto wathces in the new millennium and in 2004 Suunto released the D9 which was the first combination of diving computer and digital compass.

That same year Suunto entered the field of fitness watches with a brand new, highly sophisticated running and training watch, the Suunto t6. This was a heart rate monitor combined with sports laboratory abilities that provide it with precise, high-quality measurements on training effect which is an indicator of the user’s fitness gain in a particular training session. The t6 watch proved such a success, that it was followed up with an entire series of watches for athletes of all levels and abilities. It marked the beginning of an era of advanced Suunto computer watches catering to the needs of advanced athletes and fitness enthusiasts of all levels and abilities.

The next major advancement from Suunto was the launch of a new series of outdoor sports instruments, the Suunto Core and Suunto Lumi. The Core watch combines Suunto’s traditional compass abilities with contemporary design direction and advanced “ABC” – altimeter, barometer and compass features. The Suunto Lumi sports watch is in fact the first female outdoor sports watch that is specifically designed with the needs of women in mind. It is a watch made for women and designed by women, both of these products have been highly successful and have fared incredibly well in design competitions. The Suunto Lumi won both the if design awards in 2008 and the reddot design award, while the Suunto core won the reddot “Best of the Best” nomination, also in 2008.

In the following year, the Suunto HelO2 dive computer was introduced into the market, it was the first diving computer from the Suunto company that has full mixed gas capabilities. The watch is targeted at technical divers who need multiple gasses such as nitrox, trimix and oxygen when diving to deeper depths and longer dives.

Later in the year Suunto made its entry with its first premium sports watch collection, the Suunto Elementum, which is targeted at active city dwellers who are intrigued by a multitude of activities such as diving, outdoor activities or sailing. This watch combines both style and function in one discrete package.

The Suunto sports watch is today, one of the market leaders for divers, runners and fitness enthusiasts and outdoors and adventurers world-wide. It is also a sports watch that is prized by skiers, sailors and golfers due to its dependability, accuracy and well thought out design that pays a lot of attention to detail. The Suunto sports instruments provide a high level of functionality that is melded with great aesthetics and care for detail. The Suunto sport watch instruments provide a great range of sport-specific features that help athletes of all levels abilities to both improve and analyse their performances. Located in Vantaa Finland, Suunto is the employer of 500 people throughout the globe and a distributor to over 100 countries.

I first heard about Suunto when I discovered the Suunto Training Series, an advanced fitness line of sports watches used to assist runners and athletes achieving their goals.

Well it turns out Suunto is much more than just a fitness sport watch manufacturer. They are in fact held in highest regard for their Divers Watches and have gained a reputation for their outdoor watches. We have covered one of Suunto’s GPS Watches in a previous post, the Suunto X10.

I discovered an article this week that describes the Finnish sports watch company and in particular what their core products are.

Some of the individual sports watches listed in the article are admittedly redundant, as the article was written a few years ago, but I thought it summed up the essence of Suunto as a company, so I have posted it here…

Suunto Watches – Why, A Quick Review
By Patrick Young

Suunto Watches are unique and cutting edge, this company has it all in one package. One of the company’s credos is “suunto replacing luck”, and how apt that truly is for the variety and quality of watches, dive computers they turn out! These wrist watch computers are for the urbanite, divers, hikers, sailors, golfers and boarders of all kinds. If you are into outdoor sports in a big way or just want to hang out with an MSN browser on your watch at the local coffee shop, you should look into these watches.

Suunto is a Finnish company and was first started in 1936. Tuomas Vohlonen first invented the liquid filled compass. This was a definite necessity for Finnish troops during the second world, as Finland is a flat country full of ice and snow, not to mention dense forests. The company wanted people to know how to get around, this is definitely the track the company kept up for the last 70 years. Seemingly they have not wavered from those parameters.

The information about Suunto Watches presented here will do one of two things: either it will reinforce what you know about Suunto wristwatches or it will teach you something new. Both are good outcomes.

In the 70s Suunto started with a line of wrist compasses that operated in three dimensions which enabled divers to keep their bearings underwater. By the 80s and the advent of computers, digital instrumentation enabled Suunto to launch devices that calculated how to conduct a safer dive, by calculating the water pressure, and temperatures. These innovations proved that knowledge during dives and not just luck were a lot better and drastically decreased dive accidents overall. One less thing for divers to worry about, because things can go wrong!

Basically Suunto is best know for it’s diving instruments, they are renown with divers the world over. One of their most popular dive watches is the Suunto Stinger, it is a state of the art, full decompression dive computer that is compact in size and made of either steel or titanium. Suunto wrist-watches are not only meant for divers though. They have a lineup of cutting edge watches that cover pretty much any outdoor sports. One of their latest lineups is getting more popular by the day. The Suunto M3i or the Suunto N3 is hooked up to MSN and is available in Canada and the US. This wristwatch computer has a browser onboard so it’s a definite urban hit. I am quite fond of the Suunto X9i which has a GPS, compass, chronograph, altimeter as well as a barometer, if your into hiking and or going into the rough, this puppy’s for you.

Suunto Watches are extremely well made and durable. For the outdoor enthusiast you simply must look further into the Suunto lineup of watches. Suunto Wrist-Watches continues it’s pursuit of taking the guessing out of where your at and where your going. These finely made Finnish watches are a safety asset to any outdoors-person, definitely worth a real good look.

Now you can understand why there’s a growing interest in Suunto Watches. When people start looking for more information about Suunto Watches, you’ll be in a position to meet their needs.

I have written many articles over the years. This is a fairly recent watch site endeavour, but the fact is I have always loved watches. Despite the fact that my first met an untimely demise on a goal post! I get more durable watches now. Oggling and fondling watches is a pass-time!

The Suunto t4c – Training Series Watch

The Suunto Training Series watches are a collection of digital sport watch for users seeking to achieve personalized fitness and performance goals.

The Suunto watches can be worn, both as men’s sports watches and ladies sports watches. Some models in this line provide self-diagnostic features, managing and adapting a program, based on your workout feedback for optimum fitness improvement.

Put another way the watch tells you exactly how hard you should be pushing, making the training series watches an extremely valuable training tool for, beginners, fitness enthusiasts, professional athletes and coaches alike.

There are four different heart rate monitors in the series, originally named: t1, t3, t4 and t6, but later changed to t1c, t3c, t4c and t6c after Suunto upgraded all four models with a more comfortable heart rate monitor chest strap.

The post-session abilities of these watches is one of the stand-out benefits of these watches, all except for the t1c watch are compatible with the bundled Suunto PC Software which can import your training data for a complete analysis.

These watches also have the ability to display calories burned and are the only sports watches on the market that calculate and display real time achieved Training Effect (not supported in the Suunto t1c), a measure of the real effect of a workout on your physical fitness that has been proven to be a better indicator of fitness gain than heart rate measurements alone.

Recording and adapting to a user’s changing physiology, the t4c and t6c serve as training advisers and can recommend when to work out, at what intensity, and for how long.

The Suunto t1 watch is sold with the Suunto Heart Rate Belt, while the Suunto t1c is sold with the newer Sunnto Comfort Belt. Both use analog coding, (the t3c, t4c and t6c watches are digitally coded). Both the t1 and t1c support both types of heart rate belt.

Designed for athletes and coaches that want the highest level of functionality and analysis, the Suunto t6c watch helps the user achieve their maximum Training Effect by providing a comprehensive analysis of seven different body parameters including: heart rate, respiratory rate, ventilation, oxygen consumption, energy consumption, EPOC (Excess Post-exercise oxygen consumption) and Training Effect.

Like the t4c, the t6c creates and continuously updates an ideal training program. This advanced watch also includes an altimeter, thermometer and barometer and unlike the other watches in this series, can measure barometric altitude. Barometric altitude is a more accurate measure than GPS altitude.

The t6c can also display real-time measured heart rate, intervals between heart beats, and fluctuation between intervals.

The Suunto heart rate monitor watches all include:

12/24 hour clock

Calendar clock

At least 1 log file

HR limits
