GPS technology is becoming more and more viable, prompting sports watch manufacturers to create innovative new timepieces that take advantage of all that GPS has to offer. GPS Tracking Watches work by linking to satellites that provide your exact location on the earth, making for an exciting new market of Watches that can use this information to provide precise and accurate measurements for speed, distance, pace and direction.
With the recent release of the Garmin Forerunner 405, you might be excused for thinking the 305 has become obsolete, but the 305 and it’s heart-rate-monitorless sister product the Forerunner 205 are still reliable, functional products that offer exceptional value for money in the GPS Tracking Watches sphere – and include the odd trick over what the 405 delivers.
The Forerunner GPS Watch comes with a customizable display
Perhaps the biggest perceived drawback in the Forerunner 305 is it’s chunky size. Currently GPS aerials must be quite large in size and something you must keep in mind when shopping for a GPS watch, however the trade-off for size are benefits that are unavailable in any other type of watch. Benefits such as the measuring of speed, distance, direction and recording way points along the course. This Garmin GPS Running Watch also allows uploading of data and accurate plotting on a computer map in the sophisticated Garmin’s Software Package that is part of the bundle.
Unlike many competing GPS Tracking watches, the Forerunner 305 has the GPS antenna is integrated into the watch piece, so there are no bulky external GPS equipment to attach to your body. Just put it on your wrist and you’re set! The 305 utilizes the high-sensitivity SiRFstar III GPS receiver which gives it superior coverage over older GPS watch units. First time you use the Forerunner watch it takes only a few minutes to lock onto the GPS satellites. The next time after acquisition is near-instantaneous.
The wrist unit can display a top-down 2-dimensional map allowing you to view way points in relation to your current position
The Forerunner GPS Watch 305 is designed specifically for runners and other fitness enthusiasts who can benefit from speed, distance and directional information. Unlike the Forerunner 405, the 305 also offers some rudimentary navigational features like mapping, way-point marking and routing. The wrist unit can even display a top-down 2-dimensional map.
Where the 305 really shines are it’s fitness features. The watch features a 4-line real-time data display that is customizable, can be configured on multiple display screens and set to auto-cycled in real-time. The watch can display a large number of data-fields that relate to all aspects of your training, such as calories burned, distance, elevation, grade, heading and multiple lap and pace combinations.
The Garmin GPS Running Watch 305 (but not the 205) comes with a coded heart-rate chest strap, giving you the ability to track heartrate information and includes heartrate zones and alerts you when your heart rate falls outside a configurable range.
The virtual partner features allows you to compete against a virtual competitor. The watch indicates if you are lagging behind or surging ahead
Like previous Forerunner watches the 305 includes the Virtual Partner feature, that lets you to compete against a computer opponent – the watch indicates when your opponent is ahead or behind you. Multiple workout options are also included such as Quick Workouts – you set the distance/time, distance/pace or time/pace and off you go, Interval Workouts – same as Quick Workouts, but let you add repetitions and rest between them and Advanced Workouts that let you combine workout steps, record warm-up and recovery periods and set goals at each step.
Workouts can also be created on the Garmin Training Center Software and uploaded to the Forerunner watch via USB cable. The Forerunner is also compatible with Motionbased.com (Soon to become Garmin Connect), which is an internet service where you can upload GPS data, perform functional analysis as well as share maps, workout and performance data with other community members.
The Garmin Forerunner 305 is highly recommended for serious athletes who want to measure, record and track every aspect of their training. If you want to benefit from the power of GPS, we believe the Forerunner 205 and 305 Watches currently represent the best value for money of all GPS Tracking Watches.
