If you are planning to run a Marathon, or a similar endurance event, you may wish to keep track of the distance you have covered and more importantly how far you have yet to go.
The London Marathon, and other major endurance running events do a good job of marking out the kilometers and miles, but many races do not which makes it difficult to know if you are running at the right pace.
Fortunately, Timex GPS watches have a feature that can help. Distance alerts is a feature based on the Timex GPS device, that triggers an alert when you have traveled a specified distance or multiples of that distance.
Setting a distance alert of say, one mile for instance, will activate an alarm in your watch that will sound an alert when you have traveled one mile, then two miles, then three miles and so on.
Timex Watches that support distance alerts include the Timex Bodylink line of watches. These are advanced sports watches that utilize GPS satellite tracking to accurately measure your speed and distance.
Another line of GPS watches that support distance alerts are the Timex Ironman Speed + Distance Watches. The speed and distance watches are a cheaper alternative to the Bodylink watches and can accurately measure speed, pace and distance, but unlike the Bodylink watches do not support elevation or altitude measurements, do not have navigation features and do not have the ability to plot your routes on a map.
Setting a distance alert on a Timex Ironman watch quick and intuitive. It is either toggled either ON or OFF in Configure Mode. You can set the distance in increments of .25 of a unit. The distance alert feature only functions when the watch’s chronograph is running.
A clever use of the distance alert for those athletes who like to know when they’re at the half way point of their workouts is to set the distance to half of the overall distance of a run. Say for example you are out doing a 10k loop. You can set a distance alert for 5k, which lets you know you are half way through your event. You can also check your split time at that point.
In fact the Bodylink watches have an auto split feature that records splits based on distance traveled. Event or session splits can later be recalled in Summary Mode.
